There are a ton of guitar chords but I can try to simplify the number. Using the 12-note chromatic scale will help do so. Here’s a list of combinations below:

  2. notes = 66 (not a chord)
  3. notes = 220
  4. notes = 495
  5. notes = 792
  6. notes = 924
  7. notes = 792
  8. notes = 495
  9. notes = 220
  10. notes = 66
  11. notes = 12
  12. notes = 1

Total # = 4017

Total # of playable guitar chords = 2341

What Are Guitar Chords For Beginners?

As a beginner there are 5 chords you should familiarize yourself with. These chords consist of E, C, D, G and A. These are the 5 major chords that will get you started playing your guitar as a beginner.

When referring to major chords the term major basically just describes the quality of the chord. The chords mentioned here are often considered to be the easiest chords to play which is why they are usually referenced when teaching beginner to play the guitar.

What Are Guitar Chords Used For?

Guitar chords are used to make songs. You can even make your own song using guitar chords. To do this you would simply choose the key in which you would like to play in.

Keys C, D, E, G and A are all good keys to play on guitar. Major keys often cause the audience to experience happiness while minor keys bring sadness.
