Why Should You Know How To Hold A Guitar Properly?
Why should you learn how to properly hold a guitar? Well, playing the guitar can be very fun and enjoyable. But when you don’t hold it the right way it can cause you to be uncomfortable, may effect the way you play and maybe even make playing the guitar not fun for you.
On a more negative side you can experience joint pains in your elbow and maybe strain your back and neck if holding it incorrectly. So as you can probably tell by now, holding a guitar the right way is something you should definitely learn before learning to actually play one.
What Are The Benefits Of Holding A Guitar The Right Way?
There are always benefits when doing things the right way. Some of the benefits of holding a guitar properly is:
- It makes playing the guitar so much easier.
- You will have better control of the guitar.
- You will NOT have pains in your elbow when playing for longer periods of time.
- Your back and neck won’t hurt from you leaning over to play.
- Who ever your playing for will be so amazed because you will only have to focus on playing and NOT holding your guitar.
How To Hold A Guitar When Sitting?
If you choose to play a guitar sitting down you should know that there is a trick to doing it the right way.
The trick is to sit down in a chair or where ever you choose to sit and make sure that both of your feet are straight on the floor and your back is straight.
Then, you set the guitar waist (the curvy part of the guitar body) on your dominant side. For example, if you’re right handed you put the guitar on your right leg and if you left handed you put the guitar on your left leg and rest that dominant arm on the body of the guitar.
Resting your dominant arm on the body of the guitar will help support the guitar and stop the neck of the guitar from leaning down towards the ground.
After that you can pull the guitar in and put the back of the guitar up against your stomach. And you are ready to go!
How To Hold A Guitar When Standing?
Choosing to stand and play the guitar may be a little easier for some people considering the guitar strap does most of the work as far as supporting the guitar while you play.
But, when standing with a guitar make sure you have a guitar strap to make things easier. After you have your strap attached to your guitar adjust your strap so that your guitar is not hanging to low when you put it over your neck and on your shoulder. This may take a few times but it will be rewarding while playing.
When you finally get the right adjustment to the strap put the strap over your shoulder (if your right handed the strap should be on your left shoulder) and slide the strap over your shoulder to tilt the neck of the guitar upward.
The body of the guitar should be up against your stomach when you’re finished adjusting the strap. Then, put your left hand under the guitars neck and your right hand over the guitars body and you are good to go.
