How many guitar lessons do you need to be considered a pretty decent guitarist?
Well, the amount of lessons an individual needs is dependent on their learning capabilities, the method of learning they are using, and also the kind of guitar they are learning how to play.

There are also other variables to consider such as the amount of time you spend on practice, the cost of each guitar lesson, and most importantly the goal you have set for yourself as a guitarist.
As such the number of lessons, an individual needs tend to vary.
The average number of lessons however ranges between 16 and 20 lessons.
When first starting out as a beginner you will typically need anywhere from four to six months of guitar lessons that will cover all the basics of learning guitar. Then later on you will learn how to express your guitar skills in your own way over time.
But of course the time length is just an estimate and ultimate depends on how the well the teacher and students work together.
While this certainly depends on a number of variables that are difficult to predict, the general trajectory of weekly guitar lessons looks like this:
- Four to six months of basic guitar learning [16 – 20 lessons]
- Four to six additional months of application [16 – 20 lessons]

How Many Guitar Lessons Do You Need?
As stated before on average the amount of guitar lessons may range from 16 to 20 lessons plus more depending on how far you want to go. But in most cases the primary factor that determines how many lessons you get is a person’s budget.
How much can you spend on guitar lessons?
Traditionally, the price of in person guitar lessons would add up very quickly. But, with online lessons making things more affordable the average person can learn a lot more with lessons.
Let’s find out what you should take into consideration when trying to determine how many guitar lessons do you need.
1. Learning Capabilities
Some people are naturally more musical than other people. This would mean that they require a lesser amount of effort to grasp the lessons or the basics of playing a guitar. They will need a fewer number of lessons over a shorter period of time in order to reach the desired level.
However, on the other hand, people who are less musical will need more time and more lessons to reach their desired goal. They will take relatively longer to grasp the same concepts and basics and they would also need to put in more effort than naturally musical people. This will then require them to invest in more lessons and it will take them more time to eventually learn and master the guitar.
This is why you will find that some people will become rock stars over a short period and some people will take way longer to achieve the very same goal.
2. Method of Learning Guitar

While some people sign up for classes and get music instructors, other people prefer learning how to play all on their own.
People who have instructors will often have a learning structure that is already in place. Their fate is determined by the nature of the curriculum or the syllabus that has been put in place by that particular instructor. This means the number of lessons you will need are predetermined.
Most instructors will offer 16 to 20 lessons depending on the experience they have had with previous students or the experience they had as students.
People who decide to learn on their own will often structure their own learning system.
The number of lessons they then need will depend on the amount of time they have for practice and the study material available to them.
People who teach themselves how to play usually learn over a fewer number of sessions, especially if they employ a proper learning strategy.

3. The Time Spent on Practice

How often an individual practices has a huge impact on how many sessions they will need to learn how to play.
People who practice often enough grasp concepts quicker and can easily move on to the next concept. They are very quick to figure out their way around the guitar because they are more accustomed. Such people will be able to master the art of playing after only a few lessons because they are able to build on a lot from the little they would have learned.
People who do not practice often usually require more lessons. This is because it is easy to forget the things you have learned if you do not put them into practice often enough. It takes more time to grasp new concepts because they constantly need to remind themselves of the things they would have learned in the previous session.
4. The Kind of Guitar You are Learning
The level of difficulty of playing a guitar differs based on the type of guitar. Some of the basics also differ, this means the overall number of lessons one will need to master a guitar will depend on the kind of guitar they are learning how to play.
Acoustic guitars are very common amongst beginners. They require the standard number of lessons which is 16-20, also depending on other variables mentioned above. Electronic guitars do not differ much from the acoustic guitar and so will require round about the same number of lessons.
Base guitars, on the other hand, tend to be slightly complex. They would take relatively longer to master and this would mean more lessons. They are especially difficult for people who have no experience in handling any form of guitar.
5. The Cost of Each Lesson
Finances are a huge determining factor in how many lessons an individual can and will take. Individuals will often center the number of lessons around their budget. The price of lessons can add up quickly but there are some affordable programs if you search for them.
This means if they cannot afford to take the ideal number of lessons, they make contingency plans. They will often pay only for the lessons they feel are fundamental and can’t really cover on their own. Some people will only take 5 core lessons and then build on them.
People who do not mind spending a lot on guitar lessons will usually pay for every lesson as advised by their instructor. They will pay for lessons until they feel they are ready or until they have reached the level they want to reach. This could mean taking all 20 lessons or even more than that.
Goals
People take guitar lessons for different reasons and this often determines the number of lessons they will take.
People who just want to learn the basics of playing a guitar so they are able to play their favorite song as a hobby will often require fewer lessons that cover only that.
However, people who learn how to play the guitar because they want to play professionally will need to learn more than just basics.
This will call for them to take more lessons in order to reach that level.
